Short Film Review: “All That Glitters Is Bronze”

Directed by Jinji Sayson
USA • Documentary • 8 Mins

All That Glitters Is Bronze is a love letter to the Philippine tradition of Kulintang music, which was once nearly wiped out by colonization. Now though, around the Bay Area in California, a local band called Kulintang Dialect is keeping the tradition alive.

Combining relaxing & entrancing performances with insightful interviews from the band who are determined to keep the traditions not only going, but also evolving, this short and sweet documentary is a celebration of, and for many a nice introduction to, an important Philippine cultural tradition.

By not only exploring, but also offering an appreciation for the roots and heritage of the music in such a profound and respectful manner, director Jinji Sayson has made an informative, feel good documentary with a soulful & tranquil quality to it that pairs perfectly with the subject matter.

All That Glitters Is Bronze is a fun, engaging and insightful documentary delving into the history and freedom & expression of an almost forgotten art.

8/10
